Since others reported the same problems with the CD door and remote, it looks like a design/engineering problem. Another problem is that some operations (like changing equalizer mode) can only be done via remote. Overall, I'm very displeased with the quality of the product. I bought Philips MCM240/37 Micro Hi-Fi System because I liked the slick look, small size, and MP3 support. Had the CD door not stopped working, I would've given the product a good rating. After about 3 years of very infrequent use, the CD door stopped working (it does not completely open, just moves up a bit and then moves down). The sound quality is not best, but tolerable for a smaller room. The remote stopped working a while ago (I suspect a drained battery, but since I use Harmony remote, I did not bother to change it).
Sound quality is also good. Very fashionable and easy to use. This is really a cute piece of player. Also, has the best performance for the price I paid.
AM sound is clear. The unit also comes with screws, mollys and a template to mount on the wall, if your prefer. I never really figured how to use her Sony shelf system. The Phillips has placed all the controls front and center and layed them out in three, logical groups. Very nice unit. The remote has good range, at least 20 feet. crystal and sparkling come to mind. This makes it convienient to use from either room with the very user friendly and thin remote.
I bought this for my wife to replace a Sony whose CD player stopped working. Classic, Pop, Jazz, Rock and maybe one more. Piano music sounds outstanding. not sure that's the right term, but the stations do not overlap like they do on many inexpensive systems. This is so much easier to grasp than the bewildering array of buttons scattered around the sides, top and front of so many units today. Also, all the controls are buttons, round are retangular and slightly recessed to make for a very clean look. The sound quality is outstanding for a shelf system. It looks really sleek and modern.
Have to use two hands to pick it up an move to another room. It has good bass, without distorting, but if you want something that will shake the wallls, this is not it. An added bonus is a extra bass button and 4 or 5 pre-programmed equalizer modes. The FM tuner sounds particurally good and has good separation. Makes for a very nice departure from the array of sliders, knobs, buttons, etc., found on many other units in this price range.
My only wish is for a recessed handle on the back, or top, to make it easier to move with one hand. I don't think you can beat it for under $100. Comes with decent FM and AM antennas and includes Aux and Headphone jacks. We put it in the kitchen but with "line of sight" to the family room. Presets are very nice and easy to use, along with the auto programming feature.
The sound is very clear. One of the real benefits of this unit, is the ease of use. All buttons have a high quality and consistent feel.
Is easy to use. Takes very little space. Its cheap so if he breaks it I won't vent as much :-).For any other purpose I would say this is an extremely under powered system. I bought this for music in my toddlers room. For that purpose I think this is fine.
The replacement the company sent worked for two days. So the unit works well and the sound is fine, but I I can't set the sleep, repeat, or shuffle funcitons. Here's another example of a product that has features available only on the remote control. I'm awaiting the third replacement; it's been six weeks and I fully expect I won't ever receive one. I won't ever buy another Philips product. Once the remote quits, you are out of luck. The first remote worked for about 8 months.
